Engine Camshaft

An engine camshaft is a rotating shaft inside an engine that controls the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves.

It has precisely shaped lobes (cams) that push on valve lifters, rocker arms, or cam followers, which in turn open the valves at specific times in the engine’s cycle. The camshaft’s timing is synchronized with the crankshaft via a timing belt, chain, or gears to ensure valves open and close in coordination with piston movement.

Engine Camshaft Failure Symptoms

• Tapping, Ticking, or Popping Noises from the Engine: Worn lobes or damaged lifters can cause irregular valve operation.
• Poor Engine Performance / Power Loss: Incorrect valve timing or worn lobes reduces airflow and combustion efficiency.
• Misfires or Rough Idle: Valves may not open/close correctly, causing incomplete combustion.
